Free concerts in historic settings: two Aragon venues hosting live music this weekend

Two historic venues, two very different musical styles and one shared goal: bringing culture to some of Aragon’s most special locations. The Cathedral of Roda de Isábena in Huesca and the Church of San Francisco in Lumpiaque, Zaragoza, will replace some of their usual silence with live music this weekend. Calavera’s acoustic pop and the sounds of the Aragonia Chamber Orchestra will headline two concerts on October 24 and 25, respectively, as part of the Aragon, Land of Culture program.

The first event will take place on Saturday, October 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Roda de Isábena, one of the most distinctive heritage sites in Huesca province. Calavera, the musical project of Aragonese artist Álex Ortega, will perform an acoustic concert there in a setting very different from that of conventional music venues.

With a style defined by upbeat pop, Calavera has developed a sound in which melodies and lyrics take center stage. Built from different layers of sound, the songs explore universal emotions such as love and heartbreak. The musician has released two records, which have been well received by critics and audiences.

The acoustic format will offer an opportunity to discover a more intimate side of his compositions, with the voice and melodies taking the lead in a setting as unusual for a pop concert as a cathedral.

FROM THE CATHEDRAL OF RODA DE ISÁBENA TO THE CHURCH OF LUMPIAQUE

The musical baton will be passed on Sunday, October 25, at 7:00 p.m. at the Church of San Francisco in Lumpiaque, in Zaragoza province. This time, the spotlight will be on the Aragonia Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble founded in Zaragoza in late 2001 through the union of several musicians.

What began as a plucked-string group evolved over the years into a chamber orchestra featuring string and woodwind instruments. This development is also reflected in its repertoire, which spans compositions from the Renaissance to contemporary music and is not limited exclusively to the classical sphere.

One of the ensemble’s goals is to recover works and composers that have been relegated to the background, bringing audiences music that is less commonly featured in concert programs.

LIVE MUSIC IN HISTORIC SETTINGS

Both performances are part of "Aragón, Land of Culture", an initiative promoted by the Directorate-Generals for Culture and Cultural Heritage and Tourism of the Government of Aragon to expand artistic programming across the region.

The project seeks to combine Aragonese artists with emblematic venues across the region, turning the concerts into an opportunity to discover the heritage of municipalities far from the major cultural circuits.

This weekend, the program will travel from Huesca’s Ribagorza district to Zaragoza’s Valdejalón district, with two events offering everything from pop songs about love and heartbreak to compositions from different periods in music history.
