One day earlier, on October 8, Fundación Ibercaja will officially present the renovation to the media. The project expands the space to 4,661 square meters and adds a new entrance from Santiago Street, next to Pilar Square. The entrance will feature a stone façade displaying fragments of Francisco de Goya's prints.
IMMERSIVE ROOMS TO ENTER GOYA'S UNIVERSE
One of the major changes will come through technology. The renovation adds seven new experiences that will accompany the collection and offer a different way to explore Goya's work and life. They include an immersive room where images will be projected onto the walls, floor and ceiling. There will also be information displays, interactive installations, content explaining the techniques used by the artist and a geolocated feature allowing visitors to discover which museums and collections around the world currently house his works.
The aim is for technology not to replace the artwork, but to provide context and facilitate its interpretation through audiovisual and interactive tools
A TERRACE WITH VIEWS OF PILAR
Another major new feature will be located at the top of the building. The new museum will have a panoramic rooftop and a glass terrace with privileged views of the Basilica of Pilar, designed not only as a viewpoint but also as a cultural and meeting space.
An educational area and the Francisco de Goya Study Center will also be added, dedicated to research and outreach about the artist. The latter will bring together more than a thousand volumes from different Fundación Ibercaja collections to facilitate the study of his life and work.
MORE THAN 40 WORKS TO LAUNCH THE NEW MUSEUM
The reopening will also feature a special presentation. “Only Goya. The Art of Seeing” will be the inaugural exhibition and will bring together more than 40 works by the artist from some of the world's leading collections and museums. Curated by Luis Fernández-Galiano, the exhibition will focus on the way Goya observed and represented the society of his time.
On October 9, therefore, Zaragoza will reclaim one of its leading cultural spaces. An expanded, technologically advanced Goya Museum directly connected to Pilar Square that seeks to strengthen the Aragonese capital's appeal as a destination for those wishing to explore the work of the region's most internationally renowned artist.
MUCH MORE THAN AN ART MUSEUM
Fundación Ibercaja's aim is for the new Goya Museum to offer activities beyond its permanent collection and exhibitions. Alongside its artistic program, it plans to develop initiatives related to history, education, theater and music, as well as talks and outreach activities.
