Gaspar Torrente was orphaned by his mother when he was just one year old. He spent his childhood with his father, an itinerant tailor, until his father died in 1897. At that point, he moved in with a brother who lived in Barcelona, where a Catalan family took responsibility for his education. He worked in a bookbinding workshop and, in 1920, established his own business, "La Industria Aragonesa," a small factory producing paper goods.
He joined the "Centre Nacionalista Republicà de Gracia" around 1912 and became one of the first members of the Aragonese Regionalist Union of Barcelona. He was one of those who promoted its transformation into a nationalist organization called the Aragonese Union, and he served on its Executive Board from February 1919. He also held positions in the Aragonese Regionalist Youth of Barcelona and the Aragonese Unionist Youth of Barcelona.
In 1928, he moved to Graus and founded the newspaper El Ideal de Aragón in June 1930. He also founded the "Regionalist Union." In October 1931, he returned to Barcelona and became recording secretary of the Municipal Committee of Barcelona’s Federal Democratic Republican Party. Later, he created an Aragonese nationalist political organization called the Aragonese State, and was elected its president in January 1934.
During the Civil War, he supported the establishment of the Council of Aragon, but became disillusioned with its actions and called for its dissolution. He was arrested by Francoist troops in January 1939 and imprisoned until August of that year. He then worked at "La Industrial Bolsera" and was arrested again in December 1941, being released in December 1941. Gaspar Torrente died in Barcelona on March 21, 1970.
WHAT IS AN ANNIVERSARY?
An anniversary is an important date or event that is celebrated or remembered on a particular day of the year. It generally refers to anniversaries of historical events, major discoveries, the birthdays of notable figures, religious dates or commemorations of national events.
Anniversaries can be commemorative, educational or simply informative. Some are globally significant, while others may be more relevant at a local or regional level. Anniversaries are an important way to remember our past and reflect on its meaning for the present and the future.
