With capacity for 1,990 residents: Aragon advances Broto-Oto wastewater treatment plant

The Government of Aragon is taking another step to improve wastewater treatment in the Pyrenees of Huesca. The regional executive has authorized the Aragonese Water Institute (IAA), an agency under the Department of Environment and Tourism, to put out to tender the contract to build and initially operate the Broto-Oto Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the province of Huesca. The project has a budget of 4,324,767.76 euros, including VAT, and will provide the municipality with suitable infrastructure to treat its wastewater.

The future WWTP will have the capacity to handle a pollutant load equivalent to 1,990 residents. Its design takes into account the characteristics of Broto-Oto and the significant population increase recorded during the summer months. The municipality has 650 registered residents, although during the summer season it reaches an estimated average of around 1,700 residents.

NEW INFRASTRUCTURE TO IMPROVE WASTEWATER TREATMENT

The construction of the treatment plant will improve the treatment of wastewater discharges. The current situation also has an economic impact on the local authority, as it increases the discharge levy imposed by the basin authority and may lead to penalties.

The original construction project was drawn up in 2015 and subsequently updated through an addendum in 2023 to adjust its prices. The Aragonese Water Institute approved the project and its addendum in May 2024, after submitting them for public consultation without any objections being filed.

THE INVESTMENT WILL BE DISTRIBUTED BETWEEN 2027 AND 2030

The investment will be financed through the Aragonese Water Institute's own resources and distributed between 2027 and 2030. Specifically, 400,000 euros will be allocated in the first year, 1.5 million euros in 2028, 2,374,767.76 euros in 2029 and 50,000 euros in 2030.

The contract covers both the construction work and the plant's initial operation to bring the facility into service.
