Huesca becomes the capital of sweets: 22 stalls and the best butter palmeras

Huesca is sweet once again. The Huesca Is Sweet fair will return for its third edition with 22 stalls, one more than last year, and a program combining tastings, workshops, competitions, children’s activities and music. On Monday the 19th, a day specifically aimed at industry professionals will also be held.

The event was presented this Friday in López Allué Square by Huesca Mayor Lorena Orduna and the president of the province’s Bakers and Confectioners’ Guild, Jairo Vincelle. “Huesca is a city with an extraordinary pastry-making tradition, with century-old establishments and professionals recognized both within and beyond our borders who have successfully combined tradition and innovation,” Orduna said. The city council also hopes to capitalize on this track record as a tourism and economic draw for the city.

THE BEST BUTTER PALMERAS GO HEAD-TO-HEAD AGAIN IN HUESCA

One of the highlights of this third edition will be the Best Butter Palmera in Spain Competition, returning for the second year with new features. The contest will have two categories—plain butter palmeras and chocolate butter palmeras—with a €1,500 prize in each. The competition will take place on Sunday, October 18, and entries will remain open until the 9th. So far, nine participants from different Spanish provinces have already registered.

The competition will be one of the main attractions at a fair that will also feature Pastelería Galicia, from Tordesillas, as a special guest after receiving the Vicente Ascaso Award at the previous edition. The program will also reach Villahermosa Palace, where workshops will be led by professionals including Eric Ortuño of L’Atelier in Barcelona and Manu Jara of Seville. The culinary offerings will be joined by children’s activities, the Zampaflanes competition and, as a new feature, two small concerts showcasing young local talent.

A FAIR THAT LOOKS BEYOND THE WEEKEND

Huesca Is Sweet will extend its program this year through Monday, October 19, with a day devoted exclusively to pastry and confectionery professionals. It will be a day without sales to the public, designed to share knowledge, exchange experiences and address issues of interest to the industry. “We want Huesca Is Sweet to be more than just a trade fair, but also a space for knowledge, innovation and opportunities for our pastry sector,” Orduna explained.

The fair also aims to strengthen its tourism and economic impact after nearly 10,000 people attended the previous edition over the weekend. According to municipal estimates, around 20% of attendees came from outside the province, while transactions made solely within the fairgrounds approached €100,000. “Supporting our gastronomy also means supporting Huesca’s economic development,” the mayor stressed, adding that she hopes those drawn by the sweets will also take the opportunity to discover the city’s heritage, hospitality industry and shops.
