Defense minister visits Castillejos Division in Huesca, key to NATO in 2027

Defense Minister Margarita Robles visited the headquarters of the “Castillejos” Division in Huesca today, highlighting its members’ commitment, as well as that of the entire Spanish Army, to international collective security. The unit is preparing to lead NATO’s Allied Reaction Force (ARF) Land Component Command in 2027.

Robles highlighted the strategic role of the Spanish Armed Forces within NATO’s new force model, designed to strengthen deterrence and the defense of the Euro-Atlantic area. “Our country’s capabilities and contribution within the framework of the Alliance’s missions are unquestionable,” she said.

Leading ARF-27 is a commitment that Spain will assume on a rotating basis for the first time alongside the United Kingdom, Italy and France. To this end, the "Castillejos" Division has been engaged since January 2025 in an Alliance evaluation process that will culminate in December with exercise "Steadfast Dagger" 26, in Stavanger, Norway.

STRATEGIC AND MULTI-DOMAIN FORCE

“The world is going through very complicated and difficult times, which is why it is so important for our Armed Forces to rise to the occasion. Internationally, the Spanish Army is absolutely respected, admired and appreciated,” Robles told base personnel.

The Allied Reaction Force is characterized by its ability to carry out different types of missions and deploy rapidly. From the headquarters in Huesca, it will coordinate a force package capable of deploying within a maximum of ten days and assuming command of multinational land operations wherever NATO requires it.

During the visit, the minister was accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Spanish Army, General Amador Enseñat, who acknowledged the “enormous and difficult challenge” facing the Division’s personnel.
