Another 33.1% of municipalities in Aragon are in the upper-middle-income group, with annual income per person ranging from €15,081 to €17,156. Overall, 61.8% of Aragonese municipalities belong to the half of Spanish municipalities with the highest per capita income. The INE classification ranks localities according to this indicator and divides them into four groups with the same number of municipalities.
At the lower end, 10.7% of Aragonese municipalities are in the low-income group, which includes average annual incomes of up to €13,407 per person. Another 27.5% fall into the lower-middle-income bracket. Thus, Aragon has a higher proportion of localities in the two upper groups of the classification than in the two lower ones, which account for 38.2%.
ZARAGOZA, HUESCA AND TERUEL: HOW THE HIGHEST INCOMES ARE DISTRIBUTED
The report also shows how income is distributed across the three Aragonese capitals through census sections, territorial divisions used to compile statistics. In this analysis, the INE considers very high incomes to be those exceeding €21,652 in annual net income per inhabitant, the threshold marking the 10% of census sections with the highest average income in Spain.
Zaragoza has the highest percentage of census sections with very high incomes among the three Aragonese capitals, at 14.7%. It is followed by Teruel, at 9.1%, while the proportion in Huesca stands at 2.9%. These percentages show what share of each city's sections falls within the upper end of the national distribution.
The situation changes when looking at the lowest incomes, defined as less than €11,322 in annual net income per person. Huesca has 5.7% of its census sections in this group, compared with 2.6% in Zaragoza. In Teruel, no section falls below this threshold. The classification is based on the average income of each section, so it describes the income of all residents in each of these areas.
AVERAGE INCOME IN SPAIN RISES 6.1%
Across Spain, average net income per person rose by 6.1% in 2024, reaching €15,948 per year, up from €15,036 in 2023. This figure is the national average per inhabitant, while the brackets used to classify municipalities are determined by the position each locality occupies when they are ranked by income.
Average net household income stood at €40,605, 5.9% higher than the previous year. Meanwhile, average gross income per person recorded the largest increase among the indicators included in the report, rising 6.8% to €19,716. The INE said that the results for 2024 are final.
