The Aragón General Interest Project (PIGA) for the Rhodes Project, promoted by QTS, a Blackstone subsidiary, has received final approval for the development of a data center campus in Calatorao. The company has announced that site preparation works “will begin immediately” with the aim of getting the site ready for construction. For these works, it plans to rely on local contractors in order to “continue working with the community and local authorities to advance this project.”

END OF THE APPROVAL PROCESS

The final approval of the PIGA concludes the project’s administrative approval process, after it was declared an Investment of Regional Interest with General Interest for Aragón in October 2024. The campus will be located next to the A-2 highway, on 223.4 hectares of industrial land that has been zoned for this use for a decade.

The first phase includes the construction of eight data center buildings, an on-site electrical substation, supply, drainage, telecommunications and access infrastructure, and a photovoltaic plant for self-consumption. The first center is expected to be operational by the end of 2028. The second phase will allow the complex to be expanded with up to five additional data centers and new logistics or technology developments.

MORE THAN 3,400 JOBS

The campus is expected to create 1,200 direct jobs during construction of the first phase and up to 200 permanent jobs once the campus becomes operational. Once fully developed, employment will reach 3,400 jobs.

The infrastructure is expected to have an impact on Aragón’s gross domestic product of between 2.1% and 3.3%. In Calatorao, the activity will generate estimated annual tax revenue of €1,036,278. The Rhodes Project also includes the transfer to the municipal government of 785,045 square meters of public facilities and roads, as well as 47.5 hectares of green areas valued at €9.78 million.

QTS has committed to ensuring that 50% of jobs are filled locally, drawing from within a 70-kilometer radius of the project. It will also provide 1,000 hours of training for current workers and offer 50 internships aimed at labor market integration, along with 25 places for young students.
